History

In the 18th century Tufi was first recognised as an idyllic anchorage for British capital ships. Later, in the same period, it became a government station, occupied by the British. The Resort occupies the site that was formally the District Manager’s residence during PNG’s colonial era, and later during WWII Tufi became an American torpedo boat base. Since WWII Tufi has continued to be the Local Government’s district centre.

In February 2000 the resort underwent major reconstruction and renovations. The new colonial style resort building houses a dining room, lounge, bar, reception, library, office and laundry. Built from timber to harmonise with the tropical surroundings, it features traditional woven mat walls blended with walnut feature panels. Wide spacious verandahs overlook the sea and fiords, and scattered throughout the complex are many exquisite artifacts and traditional costumes from all over PNG.

The deluxe bungalows have polished timber floors and are traditionally lined. All of the civilized creature comforts, insect screens, air-cons, hot water, and ensuites, bar fridge, coffee and tea making facilities are available. Most bungalows have verandahs overlooking the fiord or Coral Sea. Tufi offers a choice of 6 deluxe bungalows, 9 standard air-conditioned bungalows and 8 single fanned rooms for the budget traveler.

It's an inviting place to relax, relive the day’s activities and plan the next day's experience. In the evening enjoy a cocktail and hors d'oeuvres by the bar or take in the sunset from the surrounding verandah or just sit and relax by our newly constructed pool and deck.

Dine on a smorgasbord of local seafood, vegetables and tropical fruits in the resort dining room or enjoy a BBQ grill on the Fjord Terrace accompanied by a wide selection of Australian wines, ice-cold beer and imported spirits from Australia. Our restaurant serves a very good range of meals including a great mix of fresh seafood, Western as well as Japanese cuisine along with local dishes. A colourful traditional dance group performing a "sing-sing" can also be organised for your pleasure. If special dietary requirements are required the resort requires advance notice.

The resort caters for a whole range of activities in addition to great diving which include blue water fishing, canoeing, bushwalking, bird and butterfly watching. For the naturalists, Tufi is home for many of the worlds most exquisite orchids.
