A great day for trekking, bird watching, butterflies, exploring the Fjords and Rainforest, all round requires about five hours of walking. We have plenty of stops a long the way so as not to make it too strenuous, average fitness level required. You will also enjoy panoramic views of the Fjords and the Solomon Sea, and along the way experience some local culture.
Walk out from Resort at 7 am and continue along trek to McLaren Fjord where we board the canoes to paddle over to the other side of the Fjord where we disembark. We then proceed up a steep track to the village of Sefora, on reaching Sefora we have a break and a tour of the old Mission and church that was established by the Anglican Church over one hundred years ago.
We then head off for the village of Kikita (I hour) along the way you will get the chance to see a lot of butterflies including the worlds largest one the Queen Alexandra bird wing that can have a wingspan of up to 28 cm., the males coloring is a fantastic fluresant green and yellow. Upon arriving at Kikita we will enjoy a fresh young coconut to drink and inspect the village.
We now proceed to the waterfalls (1 hour) a long a track that takes us through some lush jungle, its nice and cool due to the fact that we are protected from the sun by the dense jungle canopy. Keep a sharp eye out for the elusive Bird of Paradise, you will hear their unusual cry that fills the jungle air, we might get lucky and see one of the most spectacular birds in the world. On arrival at the falls we can enjoy a cool swim and lunch surrounded by nature’s wonders, this is a one hour rest stop.
We depart and take a short cut back down through the McLaren Gorge that takes us back to the waters edge where our canoes are waiting to paddle us back to Tufi. On the way down you will see the huge hornbills and a colorful variety of cockatoos and parrots.
Arrive back at resort at 3pm P.N.G.time. Good walking shoes, sun block and repellent required.
